Sustainability
Campus Compost Program
The Office of Sustainability’s Campus Compost Program allows students in the Colorado Springs area living on and off campus with the tools, training, and education needed to compost effectively. This program offers these resources at no cost, building a culture of environmental responsibility and waste reduction across the whole 91自拍 community.
Why Should You Compost?
In 2019, the US produced 66.2 million tons of food waste. When organic material, like food, decompose in a landfill, they are digested by anaerobic bacteria. This process generates methane, a highly abundant greenhouse gas. Solid waste landfills accounted for around 14% of methane emissions in 2022, with wasted food responsible for 58% of landfill generated methane.
Composting allows for the recycling of organic material. The compost that is produced from food scraps and other organic materials allows the nutrients and carbon within them to be returned to the earth, supporting agriculture and local ecosystems.
To participate in the Off-Campus Compost Program, we ask that all members of your household or dorm agree to the following:
- Compost responsibly.
Everyone in your living space must commit to composting correctly by following the educational materials provided.
- Drop off compost regularly.
You’ll be responsible for bringing your compost to designated drop-off locations on campus. Please note: Sodexo will not handle personal compost.
- Provide a $10 refundable deposit.
A $10 cash deposit is required when picking up your composting materials, which include:
- 1 compost bucket with lid
- A campus compost map (Digital)
- A waste sorting poster (Digital)
- Your deposit will be fully refunded at the end of the spring semester if:
- Both the bucket and lid are returned,
- They are clean, empty, and dry,
- They are returned undamaged, and
- They are dropped off within the designated return window at the Office of Sustainability.
- Share your feedback.
We may reach out to ask for your thoughts on the program. Your feedback helps us improve and keep the program successful for future participants.
